At the gateway to the Garden Route St Francis Bay started in 1954 when Leighton Hulett established a small fishing camp. A few regular visitors persuaded him to establish a township, and 51 plots were laid out in 1956. From the start the traditional style of white walls and thatch was set, and has resulted in a unique development. The building of the marina was started in 1967. St Francis Bay has become a unique destination to visitors from around the globe.

Activities


There are many activities in the area around St Francis Bay. Port St Francis, a privately owned harbour which is home to a fleet of Squid boats, ski boats and yachts. Deep Sea fishing expeditions can be arranged. There is also easy access to boating and canoeing either in the Kromme River, the canals or out to sea.

For walking and hiking enthusiasts there are numerous walks from easy strolls along the 4.5km beach or longer hikes through indigenous coastal scrub, through the dunes of the Sand River, and along the Wild Side of Cape St Francis.

Birdwatchers will be kept twitching with the abundant and varied birdlife. The Kromme River estuary is frequented by numerous waders, the surrounding bush and farmlands home to various endemic species. Guided birding tours can be arranged.

The village of St Francis Bay also has Tennis Courts, Bowling Greens and the new St Francis Links Golf Course.
